What Does It Mean to Vote a Provisional Ballot?
A provisional ballot is used when a voter’s eligibility cannot be immediately verified on Election Day. The ballot is the same as a regular ballot but is held provisionally until election officials confirm your eligibility.
You may be required to vote a provisional ballot if:
- You are not registered to vote or did not update your address at least 30 days before the election.
- You are unable or decline to provide an acceptable form of identification.
- You have already requested an absentee ballot for that election.
Completing the Provisional Ballot Process
If you cast a provisional ballot without providing an acceptable form of ID, you must visit your county Board of Elections in person by the 4th day after Election Day and present valid identification for your ballot to be counted.
